Q&A: insomnia??

Question by Regina S: insomnia??
I have problems going to sleep. It seems like I am never tired. When I do get to sleep I normally wake up once or twice a night. Then I have troubles going back to sleep once I have woken up in the middle of the night. I never feel rested in the morning. I have tried sleeping pills and all of that. Could this be insomnia?

Answer by Susan S
Some might call this insomnia, but it is a normal variant of human sleep patterns to awaken in the middle of the night. Before modern times, many people made a habit of doing this. That is where the expression “second sleep” comes from. You could try reading for an hour in bed when this happens, or listening to music. Don’t take sleeping pills just for this!
