Sleep apnea (apnea from the Greek meaning “without breath”) is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent pauses of breathing during sleep. These pauses can occur up to a hundred times a night, and can last as long as a minute each. Generally, sleep apnea is a chronic disorder, meaning once diagnosed, it lasts a lifetime. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are no sleep apnea cures. Treatments exist, however, that so dramatically reduce the severity of the disorder, that the patient is “cured” of many of the effects of sleep apnea.
Three types of sleep apnea have been defined: obstructive, central and mixed. Of the three, obstructive is the most common, characterized by physical obstructions of the airway. Possible sleep apnea cures for this type of sleep apnea range from lifestyle changes to surgery. Limiting alcohol, using a special pillow, losing weight, and quitting smoking can reduce the sleep apnea symptoms. Oral appliances can be possible sleep apnea cures by keeping the airway open, and preventing the jaw and/or tongue from relaxing to cause obstructions.
Most often used of the sleep apnea cures are the CPAPs, or continuous positive airway pressure machines. These do not cure sleep apnea so much as provide methods to prevent sleep apnea events from occurring. They work via a medical pump, which, through a flexible tube attached to a facemask, pushes a controlled stream of air into the patient’s airway during sleep. The air acts as a splint to keep the airway open, much the way air inflates a balloon.
Surgery is often proposed as one of the sleep apnea cures. There are procedures that can remove tissue, widen airways, etc. to prevent obstruction of the airway, thereby providing sleep apnea cures. To affect these surgical sleep apnea cures the surgeon may remove tonsils, adenoids or excess tissue at the back of the throat or inside the nose. In addition, the surgeon may reconstruct the jaw. The procedure for these surgical sleep apnea cures can involve a scalpel, a laser, or a microwaving probe.
Surgical therapy as a sleep apnea cure for obstructive sleep apnea is based on identifying the sites of airway obstruction, possibly the nose, the soft palate and the tongue. Most of those procedures have been used for years and clinical outcomes have verified their use. New techniques are continuously being evaluated and are only utilized when there is sufficient medical evidence to support efficacy and safety.
Surgical sleep apnea cures may remove the basic cause of obstructive sleep apnea, but there are several points to consider. First, undergoing anesthesia and an operation is always a risk to the patient. In addition, it is possible that one surgery will not relieve the entire problem, thus requiring a sequence of surgeries over time. If the surgical sleep apnea cures are unsuccessful, they may impede the effectiveness of other kinds of sleep apnea treatments. Lastly, the side effects of surgical sleep apnea cures can be severe, such as pain and swelling of the throat.

Researchers have been investigating sleep and its effects on the human population for a long time. One of the current focuses is on sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by frequent stops in breathing. Consequences of sleep apnea can be serious, including hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular disease, and currently affects over 18 million Americans. Sleep apnea study, therefore, can benefit a major portion of the population.
The National Sleep Foundation, the American Sleep Apnea Association, and The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research, are a few organizations who conduct sleep apnea studies. These sleep apnea study researchers not only examine the origin and the effects of the disorder, but other diseases and disorders that can be affected by sleep apnea.
One such sleep apnea study is The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of NIH’s “Sleep Heart Health Study” (SHHS). NHLBI reported in April of 2000 that middle-aged and older adults with sleep apnea showed a 45 percent greater risk of hypertension–a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The sleep apnea study involved more than 6,000 adults aged 40 and over, whose sleep apnea was assessed via at home polysomnography (PSG). PSG records body activity during sleep, such as eye movement, heart rate, respiratory effort, airflow and blood oxygen levels. The result: the risk of hypertension increased with the severity of the apnea in all participants, regardless of age, sex, race, or weight. The risk was evident even at moderate levels of sleep apnea.
A different sleep apnea study, conducted by Jana R. Cooke, MD, of the University of California at San Diego, examined patients with both Alzheimer disease and a sleep-related breathing disorder. This study focused on 48 adults, average age 77.8 years, treating them for the sleep disorder with CPAP, continuous positive airway pressure, the most common treatment for sleep apnea. Results: the patients slept more during the night and slept deeper. Since waking episodes are a problem for Alzheimer’s patients, improving their sleep, improved their quality of life.
A third sleep apnea study, performed at the St. George Hospital, University of New South Wales in Koragah, Australia, focused on the effectiveness of oral devices to keep the airway open to relieve sleep apnea. The sleep apnea study consisted of 4 weeks of treatment with the MAS, and a control device (an inactive oral appliance). Sleep apnea tests were performed on each patient at the end of each treatment period. Results showed that in 59 men and 14 women of an average age of 48 years, the MAS Therapy improved a range of symptoms associated with sleep apnea. Daytime sleepiness was reduced, as was sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep once lights are out.)
These three sleep apnea studies are but a small portion of research projects for sleep apnea. NIH’s currently lists over 50 sleep apnea studies on their website as “in progress” or “searching for subjects.

My boyfriend has sleep apnea and snores. It has gotten progressively worse. I am not sure what to do. it seems when i elbow him, he stops temporarily but not long enough for me to fall alseep. It is often so back that it not only prevents me from sleeping but, once i fall asleep, it wakes me up again. HELP!

Sleep apnea should be diagonsed from a reputable sleep clinic. There may be another reason for his snoring such as weight etc.
The usual treatment is sleeping with a positive air flow machine (I think it is called Cpac. If he stops breathing his oxygen level goes down and it can be a very dangerous health condition. Have him see a Dr. that specializes in sleep problems.
