Why Aren’t You Using Natural Remedies For Insomnia Treatment?
Article by Connie Wolf
Let’s face it, you and most adults and even children, have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another. Did you know that it has been estimated that 30% to 50% of the general population have been affected by insomnia, and around 10% have chronic insomnia? This article will explain just what insomnia is, what are some insomnia causes, some insomnia symptoms and insomnia cures.
Let’s begin with the definition of insomnia. Insomnia is the difficulty of falling asleep or maintaining sleep. And insomnia is not always measured by the number of hours you sleep since everyone varies in sleep needs and practices. Since most of us know what insomnia is and how we feel the next day with one or more sleepless nights before that, not all of us seek treatment and remain unaware of the options available to treat insomnia. I have some interesting things to tell you.
Let’s start with the symptoms of insomnia. Generally there are three types of insomnia, and these are based on how long it lasts.
*Transient insomnia: lasts fewer than four weeks
*Short-term insomnia: the inability to sleep well for four to six months
*Chronic insomnia: the inability to sleep every night or most nights for more than six months
Insomnia symptoms for Transient and short-term insomnia can be caused by stress related factors such as losing a job, marital problems, personal events and just plain worrying about things.
Chronic insomnia symptoms can be caused by medical illnesses like heartburn, menopause, diabetes, and arthritis, sleep disordered breathing, like sleep apnea that cause one to stop breathing while asleep, restless leg syndrome (RLS) which is recurrent movements of the legs during sleep. “Learned” insomnia, where you go to bed worrying about going to sleep. Age, because as we age sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented. And lifestyle factors, like caffeine consumption, alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, poor sleeping habits.
Insomnia treatment can be divided into two areas: Treatment with and without medication.
When people think about insomnia treatment they tend to think about sleeping pills that can become addictive and may just bring up more medical issues. But in my research I have found that there are actually a lot of non-medical therapies and techniques out there that go a long way to help you feel sleepy at night and stay asleep.
Here are few techniques and suggestions I have found.
*Develop a sleeping schedule
*Exercise during the day
*Keep a comfortable bedroom temperature
*Avoid stimulating drugs, like caffeine and nicotine right before sleep
*Avoid alcohol
*Avoid heavy meals before bedtime
*Natural remedies, including night time teas and alternative medicines
*Increase exposure to sunlight more in the morning than in the evening
*Relaxation therapy to reduce anxiety and body tension
Your next step? To take what you’ve just learned and find out more about natural cures and natural remedies for insomnia. Just a moment of your time, it may be a wise choice for you or someone you know and love that is suffering from insomnia.

I’m sure you’ve heard all the ‘experts’ giving sleep advice: turn off the tv before bedtime, no physical activity (gym) in early evening hours… warm milk, hot bath, etc.. you can try melatonin which is a natural hormone (health food stores carry it). We all have melatonin in our system, but the strength of it starts to decrease by the time we’re 30, which is why it’s harder for adults to sleep… teens and younger kids have a ton of melatonin in their brains!
Good Luck.

When a person who snores rolls over on to their side, the snoring is greatly reduced because the pressure on their throats is lessened. There are also nasal strips out there that claim to expand the airways in your nostrils.

Importance of Sleep
Sleep is important and is a kind of resting and relaxation method that helps a person restore the optimum level of functioning. A person experiencing sleepless nights is normal, especially if he or she is under stress. Persistent episodes of sleepless nights, difficulty falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep is what makes the person experience unusual sleeping patterns. This is termed as insomnia.
Patterns of Insomnia
Patterns of insomnia starts from difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night followed by difficulty returning to sleep after waking up in the middle of the night or waking up too early in the morning which is commonly called as “middle of the night insomnia”. Difficulty maintaining asleep or waking during the middle of the night is called middle insomnia. Another pattern is the terminal or late insomnia which is waking up early morning.
Classifications of Insomnia
Insomnia can be classified in three. First is the transient insomnia from which a person is having difficulty of falling asleep in consecutive nights that lasts for less than a week. Next is the acute type of insomnia. This is when a person has an inability of getting well sleep that lasts for less than a month. And the last type of is the chronic insomnia which lasts for a month or so.
If a person encounters one of the above mentioned types of insomnia, a remedy should be a concern. There are ways on how to combat insomnia. Remedy could be either natural or artificial. Natural remedy is simply applying all natural resorts while artificial is using synthetic remedy like medicines.
The Natural Remedies
Question is, exactly what are your natural remedies for insomnia? As I used the search engine and look into the details to answer the said question, I was lead to a certain site that gives suggestions about natural remedies. Starting with the natural hormone that can be found naturally in one’s body called Melatonin. Natural herbs like the valerian have been accepted as over-the-counter remedy in some western countries and an anti-anxiety herb named kava which is helpful for anxiety-related insomnia.
Relaxation
Relaxation techniques are also a sort of remedy from which increases sleeping time, fall asleep faster and feel more rested after waking up. Diet can be a factor too by avoiding stimulants and eating foods that can help to get sleep. A folk remedy to help people fall asleep using the scent of English lavender is called as aromatherapy. Music therapy is another remedy that helps a person improves sleep without medication using gentle and slow music. Also exercise can be a remedy. Lack of doing exercise contributes to poor sleep. Muscle tension and stress build in the body which promotes insomnia.
Physical Exercise
Exercise can promote deep sleep in a night. Hence, extreme exercise before going to bed can increase the levels of adrenaline leading to insomnia. Feng Shui is also recommended that may help promote relaxing sleep. All other natural remedies that often used for insomnia include chamomile, hops, passionflower, lemon balm, and ashwagandha. It’s up to the insomniac person on which remedy he or she will use.
